Lost Luggage - Luton Airport ... |
| |
| Individual airlines are each responsible for both the management and security of your passenger bags, as stated by the British Airports Authority. |
| |
- As soon as you become aware your luggage is missing you must report them to the Lost Baggage desk at the airport.
| You'll be asked to give a description of your bags. Then a reference number will be given so that you can track any progress regarding your lost luggage, either by phone or online. |
| |
| Sometimes a list of contents within the lost bags is also asked for. Sometimes also original receipts are asked for to support a claim. Your airline then starts acting like an insurance company, who in time make a compensation offer - although it's unlikely to match your full claim. |
| |
| Many airlines only declare bags as lost once missing for a certain amount of time i.e this time 21 days for British Airways. |
| |
| After this period of time you might be entitled to a certain amount of compensation from your airline. Airlines normally state that they're bound by the Montreal Convention in paying travellers around £800 per person in compensation for lost luggage. |
| |
| It's likely that you'll be asked to claim for your lost luggage on your travel insurance by the airline, however most travel insurance policies don't cover valuables packed in main hold luggage so you will need to make a claim against the airline. |
| Connecting Flights |
| |
| For connecting flights and luggage goes missing, is delayed or lost, you can claim against any of the airlines that carried your baggage. Each airline will of course try and blame the other, however if so they are in breach of the Montreal Convention. |
| |
| Limited Release Tags |
| |
Certain items at check-in are given Limited Release Tag (LRT) like for example sporting equipment, musical instruments and prams or pushchairs.
This LRT aims to remove any liability of the airline if these items are damaged. However, as the airline has accepted the goods for travel, as check-in, they must accept liability as stated by the Montreal Convention. |

Luton Delayed Luggage ... |
| |
| |
| The Montreal Convention says passenger's luggage is actually termed as 'delayed' for a period of 21 days after it is reported as missing. |
| |
| |
With delayed baggage many airlines offer their customers immediate one-off payments, to a set amount, to cover emergency goods like toiletries and underwear.
Others pay set amounts per day for a certain number of days, whilst others don't make any cash payments at the time, they reimburse passengers for essential items upon seeing receipts. |
| |
| |
| Once 21 days have passed and your baggage has not been recovered then they are considered lost and you can start to claim for compensation. |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
Any damaged bag claims are made based on the cost of the luggage and any items contained within also being claimed for.
Original receipts for contents are often asked for and any compensation offered is normally subject to an depreciation of cost.
Should jus the luggage be damaged it is normally replaced right away with a piece of luggage from the airline's store cupboard. |

Luton Lost or Stolen Items ... |
| |
| |
It's very difficult to prove that specific, individual items have gone missing from your baggage.
Thus, all valuable items should be packed in hand luggage. It's worth also remembering that most airlines have a clause in their terms and conditions stating they don't accept responsibility for any perishable or valuable goods like camcorders, cameras, mobile phones and jewellery.
Any items packed in your luggage that fall under “items unacceptable as baggage” in the airline’s conditions of carriage won't be covered in the event of a claim. |

| |
| |
| Should your luggage get lost on your flight having done some of the following suggestions might make things easier when claiming, or trying to locate the missing luggage: |
| |
