Mobile Phones Abroad - before you go... |
| If travelling with your mobile phone check the following: |
| |
- You mobile phone will need to be enabled for International Roaming. Contact your mobile phone provider well in advance as it can take up to 14 days for your Network provider to activate this service.
- Some countries require different handsets from those used in the UK - for instance if travelling to Amercia you will need a tri-band handset.
- Do check in advance how much your overseas calls will cost you. The prices are much higher than if calling from the UK. This is especially important if you are on a pay-as-you-go package.
- If maybe that your Network provider has a special deal on overseas calling - make sure you ask so you get the very best deal. Also check if there are any short term offers relating specifically to the country you are travelling to.
| Below you'll find the customer services numbers for UK based Network providers. It's also worth putting the correct number for your Network provider in your phone now, along with UK dialing code, for when you are away. |

Using Your Mobile Abroad ... |
| |
| |
| As previously advised, it is worth checking with your Network provider if they are able to offer a tariff that includes cheaper calls abroad for a monthly fee, especially if you are a frequent traveller. Don't forget to check how long you would have to be committed for. |
| |
| |
If you cannot, or would rather not, change your tariff it is worth considering using an alternative SIM card in your phone.
International SIM cards for use on foreign networks are available to buy at most airports and some UK retailers. Remember to check if your international SIM card expires after a certain amount of time. |

| |
Alternatively you might prefer to buy an alternative SIM card on link now - try SIM for Travel by clicking this link: |

| |
| |
| You will need an electrical adapter for your mobile phone charger as voltage rates and plugs are different abroad than in the UK. |

Activating Your Mobile When You've Arrived ... |
| |
| |
Once you enter the airport terminal and are allowed to turn on your mobile phone it will be routed to a local phone transmitter, but it will still be a UK based phone.
This works with your phone behaving as if it was still in the UK so all calls are routed back through the UK. So, even if you are holidaying in France, and you're calling a UK mobile phone also in France, it is routed 1,800 miles! Hence why overseas calls cost so much. What's more, the person you are calling will also be charged an amount to recieve the call.
Do carefully plan in advance of travelling with your mobile phone as it can cost you dearly, as you can see. |

Mobile Phone Security ... |
| |
| |
Again, in the event of an emergency whereby your mobile phone has been lost or stolen keep a seperate note of your mobile's IMEI serial number, your actual mobile phone number and your Network providers UK customer services number. Also check, before your travel date, that the Network provider does not require any other information such as a password.
Then, if your mobile phone abroad is lost or stolen you will be able to contact your Network provider to arrange for the phone/SIM card to be blocked. |

Do note that not all travel insurance policies cover mobile phones as standard. This is something you will need to request additionally.
